Future-Proof Your Home: Benefits of Electrification

Wisconsin’s Home Electrification and Appliance Rebate (HEAR) program is now available! With this program, you may be eligible to receive tax credits to save on your next energy bill and reduce your carbon footprint.

The HEAR program is a part of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and is intended to assist low/moderate-income households in saving money and energy on their home by installing appliances that are eligible for reimbursement.

Harker Heating & Cooling is at the forefront of energy-efficient solutions. Learn how you can take advantage of this innovative program to conserve energy while saving money and efficiently addressing your heating and cooling needs.

What is Home Electrification?

Home electrification is the process of switching your home’s appliances to run on electricity rather than on fossil fuels or gas. This can include services such as: installing electric heat pumps instead of gas furnaces, using induction cooktops rather than gas stoves and installing solar panels to generate your own electricity. Overall, this will improve your home’s energy efficiency and reduce your carbon emissions.

One efficient and prominent example of home electrification are heat pumps. Rather than generating heat like furnaces and HVAC systems, this system moves heat from one place to another throughout your home. This technology works with the seasons so that in the winter, heat is moved from the outside to the inside, and in the summer, heat from the inside is brought outside. There are several types of heat pumps: Air-source heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps, and absorption heat pumps that all gather energy from different sources to transfer it in or out of your home.

What are the benefits of Electrification?

There are many benefits of home electrification for your home, the environment, and your wallet! By electrifying your home, you power your home with different sources like solar and wind power.  By limiting your use of fossil fuels and natural gas that are required to power your home appliances like an HVAC system or stove, you reduce your carbon footprint.

Switching to electricity will also result in cleaner air in your home, reducing harmful pollutants like carbon monoxide – and creating a safer environment for you and your family. Furthermore, electric appliances such as heat water pumps often have higher energy efficiency ratings than fossil fuel alternatives. This is because heat pumps transfer heat rather than generate it, and can reduce your utility bill.

Installing energy-efficient appliances is easier and less expensive than you may think. And now, the HEAR program is making this service easier than before.

How can I use the HEAR Program to Electrify my Home?

The HEAR rebate program assists low- and moderate-income households in making energy-efficient updates to their homes. A home assessment is not required in most cases, and qualified technologies can be done through Harker Heating & Cooling.

Wisconsin residents are encouraged to purchase heat pumps with the HEAR program offering tax credits and rebates for installing heat pumps to encourage their adoption.

Qualified technologies that meet the strict standards of energy efficiency and are eligible for reimbursement are labeled with an ENERGY STAR. Some examples include: an electric heat pump water heater, an electric stove, air sealing or ventilation, an electrical panel, or electrical wiring. Rebates on heat pumps are available as part of new construction, replacement of a non-electric appliance, or as a first time purchase. Backdated rebates are not available for the HEAR program, but you may be eligible to receive a tax credit.

Customers with a total household annual income of less than 150% of the Area Median Income (AMI) are welcome to participate. This can include single and multi-family homes as well.
