Humidifiers
Dry air can be harmful and uncomfortable. Winter is especially tough on nasal passages and the entire upper respiratory system. A humidifier replenishes the moisture in your home and reduces unhealthy dry throats and skin, cracking woodwork, and even static electricity. Adding moisture to your home makes you more comfortable. You can usually adjust your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter if the humidity level is being properly controlled, which helps to save energy and money.
Air Filtration
The standard 1 inch filter installed in most systems really doesn't remove small particles floating around in the air. Pleated filters, electrostatic filters, and electronic air cleaners (EAC's) are available to improve the quality of the indoor air that your family breathes. An EAC removes dirt, bacteria, and other microscopic contaminants that pollute the indoor air your family breathes.
Comfort Controls
Programmable comfort controls are available with a variety of options and can save up to 20% on your utility bills. Thermostats control temperature, humidistats control humidity, and some models can control both. Zoning controls allow you to maintain various temperatures throughout the house.
Zoning System
Zoning enhances the performance of your system with customized comfort control. Depending upon how many stories, how many windows, which direction the house faces, ect. You may need to vary the cooling or heating in certain areas of your home. With most systems, if one room needs heat, all rooms get heat, whether they need it or not. Think of zoning as turning on the lights only in the rooms that you need light. That's efficiency. Heating and cooling efficiency is raised by sending treated air only where it is needed. You only pay for what you need.
HEPA Filtration
High Efficiency Particulate Air Filters (HEPA) are traditionally defined as having a minimum particle removal efficiency of 99.97% for all particles of 0.3 microns. Many HEPA filters can introduce fresh air into the house and allow for ventilation. One in three families have at least one person who suffers from a respiratory ailment. Asthma is the number one reason for absenteeism in schools. High efficiency filtration helps eliminate volatile organic compounds (VOC's), cigarette smoke, radon, mold spores, dust, pollen, and pet dander from your home. They can also reduce the presence of viruses and bacteria.
Air Delivery System
Your homes ductwork is like your body's vascular system. Supply ductwork carries treated air to the rooms of your house while return ductwork brings it back to the central system. It is important to have a properly designed air delivery system to maintain a comfortable home. Imagine your body with only half the veins needed to carry the blood back to your heart. The EPA estimates that up to 30% of a system's efficiency may be lost because of duct leakage.
Ultraviolet (UV) Light
Ultraviolet light is recognized as an acceptable sterilization tool. Most often installed in the duct by the furnace, UV lighting can help prevent the growth of bacteria, molds, and viruses where the light comes in contact with any microbes. UV light emitters also help to keep some functional parts of your cooling system clean, maintaining its efficiency.
Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRV's)
This system brings healthy fresh air into the house while venting polluted, stale indoor air. HRV's transfer heat from the venting air to the fresh incoming air to save stress on your system and to save you money.
Dehumidifiers
Your system naturally removes moisture from the air in your home during the cooling season. However, it doesn't run very often in the spring and fall. That's when moisture presents the biggest indoor air quality and health problems. Depending on where you live, the construction materials used in your home, and the tightness of the construction, you may need more dehumidification year round to ensure a healthy home. Whole house dehumidification also protects your possessions from excess moisture. Some dehumidification products also introduce needed fresh air and filtration.
